Oscar Predictions

Oscars are coming, folks. Just for fun, let's give some opinions and make some predictions for tomorrow night.

1. How do you like the choice of hosts? Will they be a hit or a miss?

Best picture:

2. What do you think of 10 nominees instead of 5? Are there 10 great pictures worthy of the statue?

3. Which picture will win? (Not too much doubt? Or will they surprise us?)

4. Which picture would you like to see win?

5. Who will be named best actress?

6. Who would you pick for best Actress? (Okay, female actor.)

7. How about best supporting actress?

8. Who was the best actor of 2009?

9. Who will get the Oscar for best actor?

10. Who do you like for best supporting actor?

11. Who will be the wowingest woman on the red carpet?

12. Who will look like she shopped at the wrong store?

13. Which male star will dress the best?

14. Which guy will get the most raspberries from the fashion police?

15. Do you plan to watch? Do you expect to fall asleep halfway through?

I usually don't watch the awards shows. But I do tune in to the Entertainment show the following night to see all the gowns.

I have my fingers crossed The Hurt Locker wins the best picture. Avatar was a spectacle, but Hurt Locker was well directed, tension-packed, and just something to see. And it's interesting the woman who directed it used to be married to the director of Avatar. Smackdown! -)

I'm with you on The Hurt Locker, Michele. I thought it was amazing. And I'd like to see history made for the first female director, especially with her ex-husband as her main competition. Love it when the worthy underdog prevails. Invictus and Inglorious Basterds get my runner-up votes. Very different movies, but all three excellent.

I haven't seen Avatar, but from the bits I've seen, the special effects are really impressive, and I know it has a good message.

I'm betting on Beau Bridges, even though I haven't seen "Crazy Heart" yet. The trailers kind of remind me of "Tender Mercies" which is an all-time favorite for the Eagles. I give them extra points if they do their own singing, and if he's playing a drunk, he's a shoo-in. I really think he's due.

I'm betting on Sandra Bullock, even though I haven't seen that one either. I'm also betting her performance doesn't hold a candle to Meryl Streep as Julia Child, but "Julie and Julia" didn't really have much else going for it. Except the husband--Julia Child's. He was good.

These are great things to ponder. I like the comments, too. I also like how TipTop Search Engine has analyzed lots of tweets to help anyone pick winners at their Oscars 2010 Special site.

Kathy, I saw most of the movies up for the big award. I realize I'm in the minority here for this pick, but for pure ingenuity and miles and miles of heart. . . my pick is UP. I've seen it three times and every time it grabs me.
Yes, it's animated and that means it probably won't place, but if I were picking. . .

That said, Avatar is probably a shoe-in. Or Maybe Hurt Locker-- which is one of the movies I haven't seen. Precious just wasn't commercial enough for the BIG prize and Inglorious Basterds and District 9 were too quirky and odd. (Great movies, though!)

Just to be contrary to popular opinion, the Academy may go with Crazy Heart or Up In The Air (especially since they LUUUVVV Clooney). I don't think the The Blind Side has enough "edge" to snag the big enchalada, though it was a wonderful movie. Hollyweird loves edge even more than it loves George Clooney.

A Serious Man and An Education were both nods to good film-making, but the Academy does keep one eye on the numbers. Generally there has to be come commercial push behind the winner and neither of these good movies qualify.

So I'm back to Avatar, Hurt Locker, and Crazy Heart. Not discounting Up In The Air and Precious. So. . . I narrowed it to half the field! Big help I am, huh?

I'm going to miss it this year - my daughter got tickets for Jesus Christ Superstar - I saw it 35 years ago but I'm sure I'll still enjoy it again - love the music.

I hope Avatar wins. I think 10 is too many choices but now there's more movies that can say they were nominated.

Catslady, I'm drooling. LOVE Jesus Christ Superstar. And I agree--10 is too many.

Betina, I didn't see Up, but the grands loved it, so we'll buy the dvd when it comes out.

I'm with the Academy on Clooney. Love him on and off screen. I didn't think he did anything spectacular in Up In the Air, which I loved, but I thought both women were terrific, and the movie was so well written and timely.

I didn't see District 9, but, yeah, Inglorious Basterds was marvelously quirky.

I do think it's a nice different-strokes-for-different-folks mix, but 10 is too many. Kinda like RWA has too many Rita/GH categories. But that's a topic for another day.

Don't have any picks because I've seen so few of the movies. But ten is way too many...sort like the bride that has eight bridesmaids...make a choice!!

I will weigh in on Monday's blog with the winners and the lovely gowns, though. I'm a sucker for those dresses!

I think Martin and Baldwin will be hilarious. Loved them in It's Complicated, although Martin played straight man. Baldwin is laugh out loud funny to me, even though I know he's sort of a puke in his personal life.
