Emmy Awards and wow, those dresses!

Sadly, I missed the Emmy Awards the other night but there was no escaping the recap of the dresses the next day! I have been stunned and amazed by the beautiful gowns (and the not so beautiful) and thought I'd share some of my favs with you all today.

This first one is Glee's Lea Michele in a navy blue Oscar de la Renta flamenco dress. Love Glee. Love Lea and LOVE that dress.

On some lists Mad Men's January Jones took the prize for the evening's best dressed but on others, it was all about, "what was she thinking?" What are YOU thinking about this bright blue Versace gown, which was shorter in the front and longer in the back with snow cone cups? Oh - and she's sporting a million-dollars Cartier diamonds just for fun.

Kelly Osbourne is all grown up and looking fine in a chic black Tony Ward gown. What happened to the punk hair and baby fat? I think she looks great!

I'm a HUGE Kyra Sedgwick fan. The Closer is at the top of my list for all time fav shows and I was so glad to see her get the Emmy, BUT, I'm not so sure about this dress. Love the rich wine color and even the fabric but the styling? Eh. She looks a little lost in that dress, don't ya think?

I wouldn't have recognized Emily Deschanel, everyone's favorite forensic anthropologist on Bones, had her name not been posted beneath this photo. Crepe and purple. Hummm

There were mixed reviews on Tina Fey's patterned silver gown. I thought she looked great but others, not so much

Modern Family's latin bombshell, Sofia Vergara looked hot, hot hot in this Carolina Herrera gown - but once again, the dress was on at least one 'worst dress' list

The general consensus is that Mindy Kaling (The OFFICE) could have ditched the 1950's style prom dress. Maybe the comedienne was attempting to make a funny statement not a fashion statement?

I must admit I have NO beef with Rita Wilson's appearance on the worst dressed list. The Austin Powers-esque Prada features dangling shells and crystals and Lucite heels. And that hair? In a word: UG.

How about Anna Paquin, everyone's favorite vampire lovin' Sokie Stackhouse from True Blood in the roman soldier-esque Alexander McQueen gown. I think she looks pretty hot!

Okay. So that was fun, right? But even more fun is this video of the opening number where, in a parody of Glee, Jimmy Falon (and several Glee cast members and special guests) raise the roof with this fun and funny production.

Enjoy and tell me what you think about both the video and the dresses!

I kept thinking January Jones' dress was an old blue bedspread she'd stitched onto her body at the last minute. Remember those thick quilted spreads?

Michele Lee's dress is gorgeous.

Only saw last half hour of the show, but was glad Jim Parsons won for his role as Sheldon on Big Bang Theory. He so deserved that.

Love Sheldon, Michelle.

I love Michele's gown. All those swirly ruffles. But most of the rest look like they either tried too hard or didn't try at all. Maybe having that much money is confusing when it comes to shopping...and life. :)

I saw the show and thought Jimmy Fallon was terrific, and I've never paid any attention to him before. The opening number was so much fun. The acceptance speeches never seem to improve. Now that we have so much social networking, couldn't they put out a list of relatives and people on the set on, say, Facebook? And then maybe they could prepare something interesting to say in case they won. It's a TV show, for heaven's sake!

Lois - yeah, I hear you. But I seriously don't get Rita Wilson. LOOK at those shoes :o(

Kathy - I LOVED the opening number. I hope the video will play for everyone because it's hysterical. I'm such a GLEEK - huge fan of the show and I loved the parody.
I especially loved seeing Jon Hamm from Mad Men cutting it up with Betty White. Too, too cute!

Oh, yeah, clothes. January Jones' dress behaved like one of the Lollipop kids's outfits. Remember how they seemed to weave and bob around the wearer, as though they'd been sprayed with some sort of polymer?

Jane Lynch looked great, and she was funny. Edie Falco looked great, and she was honest. (I've never seen "Nurse Jackie" but Falco is a fine actress, so I'm sure she's deserving.) Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) looked lovely in a dress few people could wear. She celebrates her voluptuousness with style. Anna Paquin's dress missed the mark, I thought.

There were some lovely dresses that crossed the floor. Why do I remember the bad ones better?

I loved Jewel's dress - pink and lacy and form fitting and I thought she looked great. Some of the critics panned it though. I tried to post a photo but for some reason it wouldn't fly.

Cindy, Jon Hamm looked great in his tux, and it's so surprising to see him cut loose. Apparently he's nothing like Don Draper. "Mad Men" is truly an ensemble cast, which might be why they keep winning for best show but the individual actors, while nominated, don't get the trophy.

On the other had, the two actors who won for "Breaking Bad" really deserve the awards. I was glad to see Aaron Paul win. He's terrific, and he holds his own with Bryan Cranston, who's won before. But the show is SUCH a heavy drama--the drug aspect is so hard-hitting--that I had to stop watching it.

One more. "Temple Grandin"! I reviewed that a while back. LOVED it. It's out on DVD and an absolute must-see. Claire Danes--oh, yeah, she'd be my vote for best dress, too--was phenomenal! And when the real Temple got into the act on Emmy night, well, that was just the best.

Thanks for this post, Cindy!

I never watch the Emmy's and this is the first of the follow-up fashion hoopla I've seen. My thoughts:

January Jones: I think I'd like that dress better without the long train in back.

Kyra Sedgewick: Dress looks a little "young" for her.

Emily Deschanel: Nice design but ugh! on the crepe.

Sofia Vergara: A good color for her, but I think she'd look better in this dress were it shorter.

Rita Wilson: Agree with you. That dress and shoes are aweful!

Leanne said...

Loved Lea's and Tina's dress. Totally agree with you on Kyra and Rita. And Mindy's hair! Ack! Great blog. I love watching the red carpet!:)

Cindy Gerard said...

Heather - on January's dress - and maybe without the snowcone cups? Ekk.

Cindy Gerard said...

Leanne - I was so 'bedazzled' by the dress, I missed the hairdo. Can we say Dippity Do??
Same with Rita? Jeech. Retro Grace Kelly (without the grace) anyone?

I'm not a mean person but really - I can't imagine what she was thinking.

Keri Ford said...

gah. even though you said that was Emily, I still don't believe it! I've seen her wear formals on Bones that look better on her than that.

Cindy Gerard said...

Keri - I know. I still have to look at that photo twice. So does not fit who she is - at least IMO. But then, what do I know?

Love Lea's dress. Amazing that she could pull all those ruffles off because she's pretty short.

Kyra's dress...ugh, but mostly because she paired it with that ghastly lipstick color so reminscent of the early season(s) of The Closer. They changed that because so many ppl complained, I think. Makes her look like a clown.

I'm a Gleek too! Thanks for posting the opening because I missed it. Jane Lynch is so incredibly fab.

Cindy Gerard said...

Christie - I thought Lea was Penelope Cruize at first glance. She's really gorgeous in that dress.

And I LOVE the video of the opening skit. I've watched it a couple of times now and see something new and funny each time. Very clever.

Kathleen O said...

I watched it all. The openning was great, but other than a few nice speaches, the rest was rather boring. With the exception of George Clooney and Tom Selleck. Tom has aged pretty good.
I thought for my money, the dresses I like were Tina Fey and Julianna Marguluies. There dresses were very classic and chic. I am in the group of What was January thinking when she chose that dress???

Cindy Gerard said...

Kathy - I forgot about Julianna. She is so stunning and I love her show, The Good Wife!

catslady said...

Thanks for the clip because I missed the first half of the show! I only get to watch Glee when my husband isn't around lol.

Awesome!!!

I didn't get to watch the Emmys and now I feel like I've seen the best part! Yay. The production number was hilarious.

Love Lea. Love Lea's Dress. Yep, I'm a Gleek.

Cindy Gerard said...

Catslady - don't you just LOVE that skit? They didn't miss a trick ... not even a slushy shower :o)

Cindy Gerard said...

right there with ya Deb. Let's hear it for the Gleeks of the world!!!

Kathleen Eagle said...

Confession: I've never seen Glee. Promise: I will. Soon as I get this d@#% book finished.

Okay, you got me. I found time to watch the Emmys.

Cindy Gerard said...

LOL Kathy. You're going to love Glee. Think Mickie Rooney/Judy Garland staging a musical in the barn, High School Musical, fantastic music and vocals, great little morality play plot lines, over-acting, a tyrannical cheer leading coach, a germaphobic guidance councilor, teen pregnancies and remorse, a closet gay, the pretty girls, the not so pretty girls and ... well, toss in the kitchen sink and you've got it. Tons of fun, lots of laughs and always a little lesson learned. Good, clean fun - something that's a rarity these days and it's just infectious.

I watched most of the show. Loved the opening # and thought the comedy for most of the night was spot on.

I thought Tina Fey looked fabulous, but the best dressed award really should go to Glee's Lea. She looked stunning. Rita Wilson is so pretty - don't have a clue why she went that route.

So glad Sheldon won!! Love the Big Bang Theory!

Cindy Gerard said...

totally agree with you on all counts, Helen. I really admire Rita Wilson too but she ought to smack her fashion adviser up along side the head :o)

Modokker said...

I watched the whole show and it was really entertain thoughout. The opening number was hilarious! I was excited to see Temple Grandin movie win so many awards.

I missed the recap on the dresses though. Hubby is home and he's not into watching that lol Big surprise.

Lisa - sounds like I need to see Temple Grandin. Totally missed it. Was it HBO?

Kathleen Eagle said...

Cindy, I'll watch "Glee" and you rent "Temple Grandin" (yes, HBO original) and we'll thank each other profusely. No kidding, I defy you to keep a dry eye through Temple singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" at her graduation.

Cindy Gerard said...

Deal, Kathy!
Can't wait to see TG and to hear your reaction to Glee

KylieBrant said...

Oh thanks for the dress recap! I didn't see the Emmys but I love to look at the glam gowns from the awards ceremony. Mark me down in the'what was she thinking'category for January Jones's gown. Kelly Osbourne looks great! What ever she did to lose that weight, give me some of that!

Cindy Gerard said...

Yea for Kelly. I need some of that too... although with the Osbornes, we might want to be careful :o)

Thank you, cindy, for the reprise! I didn't get to see the Emmys, so all of this was news to me and I LOVED the Glee send-up! Great fun. And I'm stating now-- it is my ambition to BE Betty White when I grow up. Always liked her work-- now I also admire her. Great woman.

And as for the dresses-- Lea Michele's is a stunner. And Rita's shoes-- yikes!
