What a GREAT line!

Just for fun, the authors on one of the loops I'm on has been posting the first lines from their first books. It's been fun. Got me thinking about iconic lines from other books and commercials (Where's the beef?) and movies. And that got me surfing around the net for movie lines. I ran across some really fun ones that brought back memories and made me grin.

So, I thought we'd have a little fun here today. Below I've listed 23 of my favorites. Check them out and see if any of your favs are on the list. If not, tell us your best remembered line - be it from a book or a movie.

"I've always thought a good lashing with a buggy whip would benefit you immensely. "

Now, just to make this a little more interesting, I've left off the title of the movie, who said it and the year of released. Want to see if you can remember? Care to guess? For those of you who don't like suspense, scroll down to the bottom of the list for a repeat complete with details. Have fun! Oh - and if you ARE guessing what movies these lines are fun, I'd be interested to know how many of them you got right. Nothing like a little early morning competition :o)

1 ) "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me."

2) "Hey, don't knock masturbation. It's sex with someone I love."

3) "He won't come after me. He won't. I can't explain it. He would consider that...rude."

Great topic !!

Lucy from 2 Weeks Notice :
[talking on the phone with a girl George met at the bar]" The man you're dancing with is deeply troubled. You're much to young to be trading yourself like a stock on the Nasdaq to a man who will not be remembering your name... or his in the morning, is still married, and recently developed a very suspicious rash. Now go home, finish high school and reach your potential! "

Bernie in Notting Hill :
"I'm sorry I am so late. Bollocksed up at work again, I fear. Millions down the drain. "

There were so many great lines from the Princes Bride!

Emmanuelle - Okay. My education is sadly lacking. I HAVE to get a copy of 2 Weeks Notice.
GREAT Lines.

Cindy Gerard said...

PS to Jane and Emmanuelle - I just added a question to the post - so I'll ask you guys too - how many of those Lines did you hook up with the movie? Inquiring minds and all that. I'll be honest - I only knew about half of them for certain and the rest - well, it was on the tip of my tongue :o)

Rosemary Harris said...

Great post! And great lines.

How about

"You had me at hello." from Jerry McGuire

"Joan Wilder? THE Joan Wilder? I read your books! I read ALL your books!" from Romancing the Stone, which also has a bazillion other great quotes.

"Houston, we've had a problem." from Apollo 13 -- the movie and the moon mission.

"Between two evils, I always try the one I never tried before." from one of Mae West's movies.

Of your 23, I guess the correct movie in 9 of them. Couldn't remember the year of release. Of course I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday either.

Marilyn

Cindy Gerard said...

Rosemary - OH Ratzo. Was there ever a more empathetic and quirky character created? Love Hoffman in that movie.

Marilyn - I cannot tell you how many times I've watched Romancing the Stone. Thanks for the reminder! Oh - and if you didn't have bacon and eggs and pancakes and OJ for breakfast, I'm at a loss to tell you what you DID have :o)

Oh, how fun, Cindy! I got 14 right.

Princess Bride is one of my favs for lines. "Inconceivable!" Love that one on top of the others mentioned.

Here's one that I don't think has been mentioned. "You make me want to be a better man."

Pamela Keener said...

How about
"How do they know where we're going?" From Trains Planes & Automobiles when they were told they were going the wrong way on the interstate.

Love & Hugs,
Pam Keener in PA

Cindy Gerard said...

Helen - awe... yeah, I loved that movie

Pamela - This is like sitting through a series of clips from fav movies. Brings smiles.

I love:

"Dodge this." From The Matrix

"War." from Dangerous Liaisons

And my hubby and I have this weird fixation on the line: "Razor. Mirror." from Greystoke, LEgend of Tarzan. You can't wield a razor or mirror in this house without getting that line quoted to you.

Cindy Gerard said...

I hear ya Michele. I still laugh when ever someone says, "I'll get the bags."

... you get the blond, I'll get the redhead ...

(Young Frankenstein)

Debra Dixon said...

Okay, if you're late to the blog on "movie line" day, you're screwed because all the best lines are taken!

I guess I can contribute something from one of my books that I've always been partial too. The heroine of this book is fairly naive and the hero's giving her a hard time. The two line exchange between heroine and hero...

"I have had sex before."

"With someone else in the room?"

Candace said...

"Snap out of it!" Loretta to Ronny.

"In time you'll die and I'll come to your funeral in a red dress!" Loretta to Johnny

Oh, of your 23, I got 20. Obviously, I spend way too much time watching movies.

KylieBrant said...

Oh this is fun. I could place 12 of them but have heard most of them.

I'm better at quoting lines from Seinfeld:

Like 'master of your domain' or 'soup nazi';

"it's a festivas for the rest of us!"

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

"Shrinkage???? I don't even know how you guys walk around with those things."

And they're spectacular!

Cindy Gerard said...

Debra - LOVE those lines. When's the next book coming out??? Truly. I miss your romances!!

Candace - 23?? Wow. You're the queen of the lines so far!!

Kylie - OMG Don't get me started on Seinfield:

"It was not a pick!"
"the sea was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli"

"But I don't want to wear a puffy shirt!"

KylieBrant said...

And don't forget the classic from Friends: "That's right, I stepped up! Monica's my friend and she needed help. And if it happened to you, I'd pee on any one of you!

Cindy Gerard said...

Snort!!

“Dancing's just a conversation between two people. Talk to me.” Justin Matisse (Harry Connick, Jr. to Birdee Pruitt (Sandra Bullock) in Hope Floats
“But you know, the thing about romance is... people only get together right at the very end.” Sam to Daniel (Liam Neeson), his step-father, in Love Actually

Jane said...

Hi Cindy,
I only knew 9 for certain. There were several that didn't ring a bell at all.

Cindy Gerard said...

Janga - you're good, girl!
And oh, I LOVE that line: “Dancing's just a conversation between two people. Talk to me.” Makes my heart get all soft and fluttery. How romantic.

Jane - some of those lines are oldies but goodies.
BTW - the Harry Met Sally line - "I'll have what she's having?" WEll, I saw a piece on Billy Crystal awhile back on BIography. The woman in the restaurant who delivered that line was Billy's mother. pretty cool.

Debra Dixon said...

Cyndy--

Thank you. And "Shhh...don't rile them up again. I've just gotten romance readers lulled into a sense of acceptance that all they'll get from me is short work." (g)

Janga--
Yep. Loved this one. Love Harry Connick, Jr.

I know I am a day or two late....:o(, but, as a child of the 80's also, and as an homage to the late great John Hughes...Ferris Bueller's Day off...Ferris, ( I am going to paraphrase cause I don't have the capability of getting the exact quotes at this time of night) Cameron is so uptight that if you were to shove a lump of coal up his #**, in two weeks you would have coal.
Pretty in Pink, Jon Cryer to Molly Ringwald, "I will always remain, a duck man"

The Breakfast Club, Judd Nelson to the counselor, "Does Barry Manilow know you stole his wardrobe?"

Also, from "Sweet Home Alabama", You have a baby!...In a bar!

I could keep going, what a fun game, thanks Cindy for a great idea, and something fun and relaxing after a long day....
