Who's Your Freebie?

Lois Greiman

Hey, I have a new Christina McMullen mystery coming out at the end of the month, so…in honor of her and her horrendous dating history, I ask: Who’s your freebie?

Okay, I understand that some of us have husbands/boyfriends/significant others who wouldn’t agree to a freebie even if the seven horsemen of the Apocalypse were thundering down on us from the sky. But if you could spend the night with anyone free of guilt, blame, and venereal disease, who would it be?

Christina and I discussed this at some length. It was a difficult task, sitting around with my imaginary friend, thinking about hot men, debating their various attributes/body parts, but for you guys…anything.

Anyway, we came to the conclusion that while physical appearances can hardly be discounted (let’s be honest--we’re all shallow here) there are actually other factors which might be more important. Attitude, for instance. Personality. Then there’s that strange inexplicable thing I’ll simply call the ‘wow’ factor.

After this long cerebral discussion, Christina was rather chagrined to admit that her choice would be Colin Farrell, because even though she’s an intelligent woman with a PhD, she has a thing for bad boys with inarticulate Irish accents. (You have to forgive her; she once bought a picture frame that was sold with a photo of a hot guy. She kept the guy in the frame, gave him a name and a history and claimed him for her own. Christina’s got some problems, PhD and all.)

But, I digress.

As for myself, I’m going to have to go with Viggo Mortenson. But it can’t be just the run-of-the-mill Mortenson…it has to be the Aragorn version of Mortenson. He has to have the hair and the sword and that novel-inspiring ‘bring on the hounds of hell’ look in his eye that makes men bristle and women go all noodley. I want the whole enchilada, sour cream and all.

So….what about you? What’s the most important element you look for in a freebie? And…considering those elements…who’s your ultimate pick? Who’s the one person you’d want to spend one mind-bending, bone-melting night with?

State your preferences, please. I’ll be giving away a signed, fresh off the presses copy of Unmanned to one fantasizing commenter.

Okay. Fantasizing is supposed to be good for the soul-- especially the writer's soul.

With that in mind, and no other motivation, I have to crown Clive Owen with the honor of bearing my freebie dreams. Especially if he's wearing the "Sir Walter Raleigh" costume from "Elizabeth, The Gold Age." I like that movie a lot-- especially the parts with him decorating the wide screen.

Whatever the gene is that gives a guy that "perma-shadow" look ought to be discovered and preserved for posterity. That and those smoldering dark eyes of his. sigh. Did I mention that my high school fantasy looked like a much younger version of him? It's a wonder I made it through German I at all.

Perma shadow....tee hee.

I've got to run out and see Elizabeth...I know that now.

I'd take Viggo, too, Lois. But I'm not picky about what version. Any mind-bending, bone-melting way would suit me just fine!

Hmm, I'm trying to remember who I said last time we discussed this, but maybe it's time to fantasize all over again, eh? :-)

Okay, since they are fresh in my mind, today (and that means this can change daily) my freebies are a brother sammich, Sam and Dean from Supernatural. Both drive up in that cool black car they drive, and...yeah.

See, the thing with freebies is that we tend to grab without thought. Free is compelling stuff. I take stuff I don't even want because it's free.

Having said that, I would try and prioritize. Aragorn is at the top of the list. Followed by Patrick Dempsey (because I watched Grey's last night and loved his defeated line reading of, "I have to start dating.") Colin's picture today put him on the list.

See? I have zero integrity when it comes to freebies. I'm willing to take one for the team if necessary.

Lois, Lois, Lois -- you just want to bring out the bad girls in us, don't you? I'm a sucker for an accent. Antonio Banadares still does it for me.

Helen Brenna said...

Ha, ha, Deb! You're so right!

And that pic of Colin is great.

*ROTF* I would do the same as Christina...but I don't have a PhD.

My freebie (as if I needed one, being I'm single and all): Captain Jack Sparrow. Actually it'd be a threesome--and throw in Captain Will Turner--because he was dead sexier when he got all dark and twisty in the third flick. (So moody, so doublecrossing! I adored him!)

MsHellion said...

P.S. Aragorn is SO HAWT. Broken but not defeated, scruffy but honorable... Yeah. He's fine.

lois greiman said...

Deb, that's an excellent point...maybe we're ummm...impulse...fantasizing. Maybe I have to give this more thought, as was made clear by the idea of Captain Jack. Why didn't I think of him. I was infatuated with him for months.

I feel so cheap. :)

Oh, and Cindy, the bad girl is just closer to the surface with some folks than with others. Don't blame me.

Candace said...

Russell Crowe...well, actually, Russell Crowe as Maximus in Gladiator.

Also Clive Owen as King Arthur (Haven't seen him Elizabeth, yet.)

And George Clooney any which way.

diane said...

Since this is a freebie and my thoughts can wander far afield I would choose, Patrick Stewart. He is the ultimate. Charm, charismatic, and a real man.

lois greiman said...

I think that's cheating, Candace. That's more than a smorgasbord than a freebie.

Betina Krahn said...

Oh, so we're smorgasbording, now?

Clive Main-dish Owen. But with starters of Russel Crowe and Jason Statham. And sides of Viggo Spicy-and-Dangerous and Colin Ferguson(Eureka)Sweet-and-Funny. Dessert tray to include a sampler of David Borenanz(Angel,Bones), James Marsters(Spike), and Johnny Depp in pirate garnish.

And I'll wash it all down with a magnum of Chateau de Clooney. Though I could do just as well with a Jeroboam of "Troy" vintage Chateau de Pitt.

I think I need a nap.

When I think of my vast choice, it has to be Liam Neeson. Just irresistible.

lois greiman said...

Betina? You okay? Are you going to need smelling salts or anything?

lois greiman said...

Liam Neeson. See. I've failed again. How could I forget? You know, when he looks sad I get tears in my eyes. I'm not sure what that's about. Did you see him in Love Actually, with his son? Yikes.

Betina Krahn said...

Took some Pepcid AC. Much better now. Back at the keyboard with visions of sugarplums dancing in my head.

flchen1 said...

Stop, stop! My poor little greedy brain is about to explode! Smorgasbords indeed!

Hugh Jackman, because he is lovely to look at, and I believe he's got a lovely accent (at times)...

Helen Brenna said...

Did you guys leave any Steward-Strathum-Neeson crumbs for me?

I swear, I could almost see Betina licking her lips!

cas2ajs said...

I'm going to have to say Orlando Bloom even if it does make me a cradle-robber. But I guess if it's a freebie, there's no restriction on age? Right? Right????

Cheryl

lois greiman said...

Absolutely no age restrictions. Bloom is up for grabs. Literally. Tee hee.

And Jackman...someone's thinking huh? Do you guys remember him in the scene from Swordfish...when he's on the roof in a towel. It's worth watching the whole movie just for that.

Some guys are made for suits. Jackman's a towel man.

tetewa said...

Okay so my freebie would have to be Ryan Goosling from the movie The Notebook! My favorite scene is when him and Racheal kiss on the dock in the rain (wish it was me)!

anne said...

If I must choose a delectable male, it will be and please, please do not make fun of me, it would be Lyle Lovett. I went to a concert this summer here in town where he was playing and fell for him.

lois greiman said...

Lyle Lovett! Hey, who can make fun? Apparently Julia Roberts fell for him too.

I have a friend who's crazy about him also. Still, way to fantasize outside of the box, Anne. Tell us why he's delectable.

Kaitlin said...

Oh, Viggo as Aragorn...the only time I thought he was hot. :)

My choice...hands down is Gerard Butler. Can we just say yum? First off, he's tall, he's got dark hair, gorgeous eyes and the Scottish brogue. *fanning self* Yummy, yummy, yummy. :D

lois greiman said...

Okay, Butler, is he the 300 guy?

robynl said...

My freebie is David James Elliott from JAG(Mark Harmon). Him in that uniform of his is just too much so imagine him in....
you thought I'd really say what!!!!

Kaitlin said...

Yup...but I liked him better in Dear Frankie, Reign of Fire and Tomb Raider 2. He's a very yummy, virile man. My favorite kind. :D

Nathalie said...

I don't know... I never think about that, though McDreamy would be great if I was a bit older!!

Lily said...

You girls have a lot of imagination... I am going to say no one... no fantasy man... work to much and don't watch TV nad read gossip magazines... pathetic!

Oh, how could anyone forget Daniel Day Lewis in Last of the Mohicans.Makes me sweaty thinking about it.

lois greiman said...

Daniel Day Lewis! No kidding. He was amazing in that movie. I'm going to go to bed now with that in mind.
Thanks, lady, good fantasizing.
